Rowers/Parents,

First, I’d like to thank Ms Gros for coming out to support the team yesterday. After doing the Raider Run in the morning, she was at the race course to see the novice girls compete at 5 pm. Thank you!

We finally had some decent weather for a regatta. Great team effort to prepare the shells and launch on time to be ready at the start line. Our men’s 1X, 2X, and women’s junior 4+ (names below) in the morning all faced heats to make it to the final races … and they all made it! Both the 1X and 4+ finished 4th in their final race. The lightweight Skylark went out for the first time this season and finished 3rd in the LW 2X final, beating Gar-Field. The women’s 4X won their final beating both Woodbridge and Potomac. The lightweight men’s quad were the only lightweight entry, so they ended up racing the heavyweight men’s quads. Our guys finished third and turned in a good time of 5:35 … just 9 seconds off the winning open weight time. Our men’s novice 4+ and junior 8+, and women’s novice 8+ all competed well … assuming all novices are available for the next regatta, we will likely try the same approach of entering a novice boat with a novice coxswain drawn from the other gender.

There is no Saturday competition this upcoming weekend due to the religious holiday; however, we’ve arranged a scrimmage with South County and Hylton on Thursday to provide a competitive opportunity. This will extend the practice window some, so I’ve discussed transportation options with the Board … more to follow.

We do still plan to practice on Friday and Saturday … the VASRA/State Championship is now less than 4 weeks away.

There is only one regular season regatta left for us on the Occoquan (Al Urquia Regatta, 30 Apr). On 7 May the whole team will travel to Mathews to compete in some open bay racing—this will be an “everybody competes” event with multiple rowing opportunities. The coaches will construct entries so that everybody should get at least two rowing opportunities; some perhaps more.  I expect everyone to attend, but if you cannot, please let me know soon for planning purposes. The weekend after Mathews is the VASRA Championship Regatta … there are no novice events that weekend—we will only enter our most competitive crews.

It looks like Monday/Tuesday will be a little warmer this week … bring plenty of water.

Coach Mike
