What is a Regatta?

A regatta is a series of boat races. These are the team competitions our crew participate in every year. A regatta often includes social and promotional activities which surround the racing event, and except in the case of boat type (or “class”) championships, is usually named for the town or venue where the event takes place.

Regatta Day Information

VASRA posts a race schedule Thursday evening or on Friday before the regatta. For those who haven’t been to Sandy Run Regional Park, here is an information sheet describing the rules at Sandy Run during regatta days which all our novice families should read through. Note that dogs are not allowed in the park on regatta days. Click for the location of Sandy Run and also for a map of the park facilities. If you have never attended a rowing regatta before, a few items that you might want to bring include sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars, a hat, a folding chair, or a seat cushion (like the ones they sell at the football games) because the grandstand is made of concrete, a copy of the race schedule, a backpack to carry it all, and proper clothing for the weather conditions. Be prepared for a mile or more hike through the forest. If a hike is difficult for you, a shuttle van transporting guests to the grandstands is available for a nominal fee. Races are held rain or shine, and only in rare circumstances are they canceled.
