Crew Open House, Sunday October 1
The Rundown. The day will start at 8am at Sandy Run with setting designated shells to slings (likely The Pilot, Intimid8tor, Henley or Jemo and a double for show). Once derigged, shells, along with corresponding riggers and oars will be loaded and secured to the trailer and stowed in cars for the trip to Lake Barcroft, Beach 4. We’ll break for a quick lunch contributed by crew families, then get to the business of rerigging and carrying boats to the temporary dock.
Boosters will set up the food tables, welcome guests, manage sign in, and collect waivers. Ergs (brought over by crew parents) will be set up for new rowers to get a feel for proper technique and the motion of rowing. At 1pm varsity rowers will divvy up to staff the ergs and take prospective rowers, possibly Stuart faculty, and interested 8th graders on the water. Coaches on pontoons will accompany the shells and give the novice rowers lessons in form. Crew booster parents flip burgers, maintain the food tables, and talk about the sport of rowing and Stuart Crew with our friends in the Lake Barcroft community, Stuart faculty, and parents. Some years, even school board members have stopped by. It’s a great opportunity for rowers to share their sport and for prospective rowers to meet the crew team members. The day goes quickly in a fun, carnival-like atmosphere. More information here.
Just before the afternoon ends, we’ll host a parent row, and get parents out on the water to give rowing a try.
At 4pm, the rowers will recover the boats, derig, and load the shells and related gear back onto the trailer for the return trip to Sandy Run. Once the shells are securely back on their racks and riggers stored away, we can call the day complete.
Please sign up so we know we have enough people to do the necessary boat moving and hospitality. The actual Open House is at Beach 4 (3526 Duff Drive). Please drum up interest, share via listservs, and invite your friends to come and share an afternoon in the beautiful Lake Barcroft community.
- Signup Genius – boat load/unload, rig, guide new rowers, and more.
