Justice Rowing Supporters:
Per VASRA outreach, this weekend’s Darrel Winslow Regatta will be held in a fully-open park—no restrictions on spectators or size limitations. That’s exciting news! But it also requires us all to pitch in very quickly and get up to speed with our volunteers and where we normally would be in a regular season. So we’re quickly transitioning to what we would do in a “normal” season by sending out a call for volunteers. Usually we would have a Signup Genius for the season, but we’ll have to do it by email or phone call for now.
Each team is required (based on team size) to provide a certain number of volunteers/resources. For May 29 weekend, Justice HS Rowing is required to provide two volunteers for the following positions, and the team will be making two launches (motorized boats) available for other volunteers. Below are the position descriptions:
Position #6 HELPER—SETUP; 6:00 A.M. – FINISH (usually 2-3 hours and done by 9:00 A.M.): 1 volunteer
Helper Job Description—You will be helping the River Rats with putting finishing touches to the race course/starting area/finish line, etc. out on the water.
Set-Up on Water:
- Help the Set-Up Driver to perform the duties assigned to him/her.
- You will be riding in a launch for much of your work, and you may have to do some heavy lifting.
- Personal Flotation Devices must be worn at all times while on the docks and water. PFDs are available in the River Rat’s shed located behind the volunteer’s sign-in tent)
- Expect to get wet and dirty—bringing a change of clothes is a good idea.
Position #37 LAUNCH DRIVER—SHUTTLE 7:30 A.M. – 11:30 am: 1 volunteer
Need someone who has driven a boat before; you will be a “taxi driver” for coaches/referees (not spectators) and others who need to get quickly from the main dock to the finish line (to watch races, etc.) and then back again to the main dock to meet their rowers, etc. It’s a fairly low-key position (I did it last week), but you will be driving the boat most of the time. You will be able to take time out to watch your rower at the finish line if they happen to compete during the AM session—boat line-ups come out on Thursday—so that’s a perk.
Please consider signing up and respond to me (only) for one of these positions, and I’ll provide a response to VASRA—we need to fill them NLT Friday noon. And don’t hesitate to call/text me if you have any questions about the positions or requirements [see email for contact information]. Thanks for your support!

A few rules from the VASRA Volunteer Coordinator:
1) All volunteers need to report and sign in at least 45- 60 minutes before start time at the Volunteer table near the HQ building – EXCEPT Morning Helpers, they report on time given.
2) EVERY VOLUNTEER MUST SIGN IN at the table – morning and afternoon shifts, do not go to your station and call in – I will be at the Volunteer table signing you in.
3) Drivers are LAUNCH BOAT DRIVERS—not land drivers
4) Launch Boat drivers need experience with driving boats. Experience boaters are good!
5) Launch boat Drivers should not wear RED.
6) Do not bring your children with you.
7) Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing.
8) High School Rowers can not volunteer
9) Give your parent volunteers good information. Make sure they know what is expected. The handbook on the website has good job descriptions.
