1) Boosters Meeting—March 3 (Thursday)
7-8 pm virtually. Check for link sent in email. UPDATE: Minutes from the meeting can be found here.
2) Boat Move Two! ALL HANDS
Saturday, March 12, 8:30 – 2:00. Help us move our equipment back to Sandy Run and our boathouse to prepare for a great season at the Occoquan. NOVICE PARENTS: This is a great opportunity to see where your rowers practice during the week and compete during regatta weekends. VASRA has changed its access rules so parents/spectators will not have access to this area during regattas (only the Grandstands and finish line viewing area), so don’t miss this opportunity to take a tour of our rowing “home.” NOTE: ALL rowers are required to attend the boat move; the Sign Up Genius is only for adult volunteers and those who would like to tour the boathouse and area.
3) Season kickoff potluck dinner and pre-regatta pasta dinners
Our team has a tradition of kicking off the rowing season with a potluck the Friday before the first regatta – this year, March 19’s Polar Bear Regatta. After a two-year hiatus, our potluck this year will be held at the Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet Club (SHBR) at one of the outdoor pavilions, the same venue as our end of year picnic/awards event. A Signup Genius will be circulated soon with details of what to bring and other details. Also, families have traditionally hosted pasta dinners in their homes for rowers on Friday nights before regattas. These are TBD.
4) Polar Bear Regatta—March 19
Our first regatta of the season! Only upper boats participate; no novices compete — details/times TBD
5) Regional Park Regatta—March 26
Details/times TBD. Regatta schedules are released prior to the event.
6) Regatta Conflicts?
It seems like every year as we get closer to the end of the season and our VA State and Stotesbury competitions, we have a rower who has forgotten that a regatta conflicts with his/her IB or AP or SAT testing. As rowing is a group sport (for the most part), one rower’s absence means a boat doesn’t compete or that a substitute has to be found quickly and able to fill the hole. PLEASE check your testing schedules NOW so that any conflicts can be discussed with the Coaches NOW and arrangements can be made. All of our regatta dates are set and most, if not all testing dates have been set by now, so it should be easy to identify any potential conflicts.
7) VASRA Volunteers at Regattas
Thank you to those that have already signed up. We have a few jobs to fill before the March 7 deadline. Please take a moment to sign up. If you have any questions please contact Sandra Coronado.
8) CHIPOTLE fundraiser—March 30
5-9 pm, 6299 Seven Corners Cntr., Falls Church
Order online or in-store and pick up (not for delivery). USE CODE M8VR3ZF on the Chipotle app or website when ordering. Click for lInks to downloadable and sharable flyers.
Why are we doing this? Rowers’ dues cover only part of the cost of rowing each year.
Cost of Justice Rowing program per year? Approximately $50,000
The amount collected from rowers dues ($875 each)? $30,000
Cost per rower to provide rowing? $1,500
Amount of additional fundraising required per rower? $625
As you can see we cannot rely on dues alone to pay for our program. We need to fundraise, and restaurant fundraisers are one way we try to do that and not “add on” additional expenses. So take off a night of cooking, eat some great food from local restaurants, and support Justice Rowing, all at the same time! More fundraisers are planned throughout the season so stay tuned.
Thanks to the Rosens for arranging these!
