Hello Justice Rowing Families: This week marks the fourth week of our season and the Darrell Winslow Regatta this coming Saturday. PLEASE READ THIS EMAIL THOROUGHLY – The Offsite parking lots change weekly.
WEEK BEHIND
Sadly, but not unexpectedly, the Walter Mess regatta was canceled because the weather was, well, a mess. I’m sure we would have done wonderfully, but that will have to wait another week.
Special Note from Coach Nate:
Justice Rowing: I wanted to thank the team for responding so well to a very rough end to practice today. With the weather turning very unfavorable rapidly at the end of practice, the Varsity Men were the only thing keeping several other (non-Justice) crews from crashing their shells into the dock as they were unable to navigate the landing process safely. Without being asked, they were everywhere pulling boats in, pushing them away, and doing all the things that needed to be done to get boats in on the only dock available for landing (with the strong wind, the long dock had waves overwashing the surface, all the leeward sides were unusable as the wind pushed boats away too fast, and every boat needed to land on the short dock windward side). All our rowers performed perfectly on the water and our boats landed safely and cleanly.

WEEK AHEAD
With a full week of Spring Break training and the Darrel Winslow regatta to emphasize the end of the week, a lot is going on. This is a great chance to get a lot of extra strokes in with this week’s practices. We will continue our cycle of mixing the boats up on Monday (maybe even some seat racing), doing a very technical day on Tuesday, really enjoying our extra-special Wednesday row by going for a long trip up river, and practicing in race lineups in preparation for the weekend’s race on Thursday and Friday.
Carpool for Spring Break: Thanks to all of you who signed up to carpool this coming week. Practice this week runs all five days (no Wednesday break). Please be at the school no later than 3:00 PM so that we can leave promptly at 3:15 PM. Those who have volunteered to drive for the carpool will be contacted separately later this evening to confirm that you are needed and for what days.
Friday Night Pasta Dinner, 7 pm (after rowers return from practice)-9 pm: The Trissells will be hosting this Friday’s Pasta Dinner. Please show up directly after practice and pick up rowers promptly by 9:00 PM to prepare for a big day of racing! See email dated 4/2/2023 for address. WE STILL NEED A HOST FOR THE 5/12 PASTA DINNER. Please sign up!
Regatta Food Table: We provide food for our rowers on Saturdays, and many sign-up slots remain open. Sign up for any/all of our regattas in one place. Don’t worry about getting it down to Sandy Run – we can coordinate with early volunteers to get it down there for you.
Regatta Schedules: Plan on learning about when your rower will compete on or about Thursday/Friday once the race schedules are set by VASRA (this usually happens late Thursday/early Friday). Rowers should be at Sandy Run NO LATER THAN TWO HOURS before their race. Rowers may be dropped off at Sandy Run, but there is no parking at Sandy Run for spectators. Rowers driving themselves may park at Sandy Run, but should carpool with their teammates if possible (optimizes parking and minimizes the chances of rowers being late).
Spectator Parking: ALL spectators must park off-site and take a shuttle bus to Sandy Run. The shuttle bus costs $15 round trip. Once the shuttle bus drops you off it is about another 15-20 walk to the finish line. You may also pay a separate $5 each way for a shuttle from the drop-off point to the Finish Line area. IMPORTANT! VASRA is using TWO DIFFERENT OFFSITE PARKING LOTS DEPENDING ON THE WEEK:
1) Commuter parking lot at Old Bridge Road and Rt. 123. This will be the offsite parking lot for The Regional Park (3/25), Ted Phoenix (4/15), Rzy Obuchowicz (4/22), and Al Urquia (4/29) regattas; and
2) All other regattas will have offsite parking at South County High School, 8501 Silverbrook Rd, Lorton, VA 22079.
PARKING INFORMATION IS INCLUDED IN THE PARKING TAB at VASRA.org.
Car Wash Volunteers: We need volunteers to help organize at least two car washes for this Spring. We have most of the equipment and a venue. All we need is YOU! Please reply to justicerowing@gmail.com.
