High Points and Actions to Take from 2/8 Season Kick-off Meeting

Feb 9, 2024

High Points and Actions to Take from 2/8 Season Kick-off Meeting

We had a great Booster meeting last night — one of the highest attendances we’ve had recently — thanks for everyone coming out! Click to read the February 2024 Booster Meeting Agenda. Some high points below:

1. Crew dues are due Feb. 18. Please pay your dues AND complete all paperwork asap. Your child may not start on the water practice March 19 unless all paperwork is in. If you’re in doubt, please check with Kelly Hardy, who will be sending something around noting what you may still have missing. Pay by credit card in full or make the second and final installment online.

2.  VASRA jobs — Congratulations! There is only one remaining VASRA volunteer position left to fill — FILLED! See the Sign-Up. Any questions please reach out to Machelle Nowlin.

3. Novice Swim Test — If this is your child’s first year rowing (novice), they are required to take and pass a swim test (swim 100 meters and tread water for 2 minutes) in clothing (shorts and t-shirt). It will be held sometime over the next two weeks during the normal winter conditioning time after school. Those student-athletes needing to take the swim test will be contacted soon about the arrangements; SEE: More details from past years.

4. Boat Move February 17 — Urgent Need! Seeking a vehicle and driver for next Saturday to haul a garden trailer (approx. 12’) with 2 aluminum boats and motors up from our boathouse at Sandy Run Regional Park to Lake Barcroft. Please contact us ASAP if you can help out.  Thanks!

5. Safe Sport requirements — Below are the Safe Sport training requirements from US Rowing that our club must comply with. Choose Supporter Level $10 if you qualify as a Relevant Adult Participant. Club code: W2GS4

All USRowing Relevant Adult Participants are required to take the 90-minute SafeSport Trained course. 30-minute Refresher courses are available as parts of this series after the initial training has been completed. Any member who is not defined as a Relevant Adult Participant below, is not required to complete any form of SafeSport training. Even though you may not be required to take the course, it can be a good idea.

Relevant Adult Participants

The following Relevant Adult Participants are required by the USRowing SafeSport Policy and the U.S. Center for SafeSport to take SafeSport training:

* Any employee, board member, committee member, coach, or administrator of USRowing or one of its Member Organizations

* Any USRowing licensed Referee

* Any current or potential National Team athlete with the goal to participate in National Team selection such as development camp, trials, or selection camp

* Any person(s) authorized, approved, or appointed by USRowing or its Member Organizations to have Regular Contact with or authority over Minor Athletes. This may include coaches, volunteers, medical staff, trainers, chaperones, monitors, contract personnel, bus/van drivers, or officials who have Regular Contact* with a Minor Athlete, staff, board members, and any other individual who meets the Adult Participant definition

* An adult athlete who has Regular Contact* with any Minor Athlete

* Individuals in a position of power, including but not limited to coaches, staff, chaperones, and board members, are required to take SafeSport training regardless of the total number of instances they have with minors. This includes positions of power held over adults only.

*Regular Contact Is defined as ongoing interaction where an Adult Participant is in a role of direct and active engagement with any amateur athlete who is a minor. USRowing defines ongoing interactions as five (5) or more instances of In-Program Contact during a 12-month period. For purposes of this definition, a competition is considered a single instance of In-Program Contact regardless of duration.

See you at the boat move next weekend! Sign Up to help us get on the water!
