Hello Justice Rowing Families:  Happy Spring Break!  This week marks the fourth regatta of our season, the Walter Mess Regatta. PLEASE READ THIS EMAIL THOROUGHLY.

Week Behind — Walter Mess Regatta

We had a great third weekend of races at the Walter Mess Regatta. Even with the reduced regatta size given that it was at the end of Spring Break and surrounded by more student holidays and a religious holiday, we were able to field three quads and a single.

  • We opened the morning with the Men’s Single (Josiah Nowlin) finishing 2nd with a time of 7:13.5. This was especially impressive as Josiah had not been able to practice in a single due to high winds and it was his third day in a single.
  • The Men’s Senior Quad (Charlie Hess, Tucker Trissell, David Caudillo, Stephen Blackadar) placed 1st with a strong time of 5:36.9. They looked strong and powerful rowing well under the stroke rating of the 2nd place boat, which finished 17 seconds behind them.
  • The Women’s Senior Quad (Anna Lyons, Brooke Ehmann-Jones, Gretchen Hardy, Indigo Brooke-Weiss) placed 1st with a time of 6:16.6, edging out Granby by 0.8 seconds.
  • The Women’s Senior 2nd Quad (Caroline Allison, Chloé Bernasconi, Sabrina Ehmann-Jones, Ella Stavlund, Ashley Forrest) placed 3rd  with a time of 6:40.5, and over a minute ahead of 4th place.

Pictures from last week’s regatta are available on our photo/video gallery. [Note: press the arrow to view videos as videos do not auto play. Click through for practices and previous years’ events.]

Week Ahead — Darrel Winslow Regatta

With this upcoming weekend’s Darrell Winslow Regatta, we hope to finally see more of the sculling boats that have so far avoided the Occoquan.

Friday Night Pasta Dinner, 7-9:  Monica Lipscomb/Victor are the hosts of this Friday’s Pasta Dinner. Please show up directly after practice and leave promptly by 9:00 to prepare for a big day of racing! The address is in the email dated April 2.

Regatta Food Table: We provide food for our rowers on Saturdays, and many sign up slots remain open. Please go to the sign up genius page where you can sign up for any/all of our regattas in one place.  Don’t worry about getting it down to Sandy Run – we can coordinate with early volunteers to get it down there for you; just send an email to this address if you need help.

Regatta Schedules: Find the heat/race schedule at vasra.org on Thursday/Friday. Rowers should be at Sandy Run NO LATER THAN TWO HOURS before their race. Rowers may be dropped off at Sandy Run, but there is no parking at Sandy Run for spectators. Rowers driving themselves may park at Sandy Run, but should carpool with their teammates if possible (optimizes parking and minimizes the chances of rowers being late). CARPOOLING IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED (by team/boat, if possible).

Spectator ParkingALL spectators must park off-site and take a shuttle bus to Sandy Run. The shuttle bus costs $15 round trip. Once the shuttle bus drops you off it is about another 15-20 walk to the grandstands for viewing. You may also pay a separate $5 each way for a shuttle from the drop-off point in Lot C to the Grandstand/Finish Line area. Offsite parking is at South County High School, 8501 Silverbrook Rd, Lorton, VA 22079. MORE INFORMATION IS at VASRA.ORG.

VASRA Volunteers:  If you are signed up for a VASRA volunteer job (you know who you are) then you may park free at Sandy Run. Tell the parking monitors when you arrive that you are a volunteer and for what job and they will direct you to the appropriate parking lot.

SPRING BREAK CARPOOL: Thanks to everyone who’s signed up to help out with the carpool over Spring Break. Thanks to parent volunteer Karen Swider for organizing.

Car washes — save the dates!: We have car washes planned for April 7 and May 5, 12:30-5, including a detailing service offered by a former JHS rower! Sign up to help out. Thanks to volunteer parents Melanie and Adriana for organizing!

The Justice High School Crew Challenge 2024 continues! Donate here today to keep our rowers competitive on the water or on the Justice High School Athletic Department eTeam challenge webpage.
