Hello Justice Rowing Families: We’re at week eight of our racing season, the first weekend of the Virginia State Regatta Championships.

Week Behind

We’ve been waiting for the Charlottesville area crews to show up all season, and they finally came to the Occoquan on Saturday. With the higher level of competition, our crews put up their fastest times of the year.

  • In the Women’s Junior 2x, in only their 2nd time rowing together, Mary Kenzie and Juliet Sage came in 4th with a time of 7:43.2.
  • In the Women’s Senior 4x, the Justice A boat of Anna Lyons, Brooke Ehmann-Jones, Gretchen Hardy, and Sabrina Ehmann-Jones came in 3rd with a time of 5:59.4.
  • The B boat of Silvia Smith, Ella Stavlund, Lorelei Friel, and Ashley Forrest finished 4th with a time of 6:17.7.
  • In the Men’s Senior 4x, the Justice A boat of Charlie Hess, Tucker Trissell, David Caudillo, and Sam Schneider finished third with a time of 5:16.5.
  • The B boat of Nicholas Kish, Josiah Nowlin, Roman Richey, Victor Smith, and Coxswain Caroline Allison, finished 5th with a time of 6:02.3.

Week Ahead and Stotes!

With the conclusion of the Al Urquia regatta, the last regular season regatta, we will be focused on the Virginia State Championships spread across two weekends: May 4th and May 11th. All our boats will race on May 11th. With this being a State Championship race, we will only be entering select lineups. We will finalize these lineups this week, with two exceptions. We will have all rowers at practice this week, but reduced to State’s lineups only the following week. And finally, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia is on the weekend of May 17th. We have notified rowers about the boatings for the regatta and will be sending their parents’ organizational emails shortly. This is an even more select set of rowers as the regatta is an even higher level of competition, the limits on entries are even tighter, and the logistics for travel are considerably more difficult.

TENTATIVE Friday Night Pasta Dinner, 7-9: This Friday’s Pasta Dinner is dependent on our race line-up for this week’s first VA State Championship Regatta — more information will be sent out later this week.  If we have it, Aubrey Hess is the host of this Friday’s Pasta Dinner. Thank you for hosting, Aubrey! Rowers, please show up directly after practice and leave promptly by 9:00 PM to prepare for a big day of racing! See email for house location.

Regatta Food Table: We provide food for our rowers on Saturdays, and many sign-up slots remain open. Please go to the sign up genius page where you can sign up for any/all of our regattas in one place.  Don’t worry about getting it down to Sandy Run — we can coordinate with early volunteers to get snacks to the boathouse for you; send an email if you need help.

Regatta Schedules: Find the heat/race schedule at vasra.org on Thursday/Friday. Rowers should be at Sandy Run NO LATER THAN TWO HOURS before their race. Rowers may be dropped off at Sandy Run, but there is no parking at Sandy Run for spectators. Rowers driving themselves may park at Sandy Run, but should carpool with their teammates if possible (optimizes parking and minimizes the chances of rowers being late). CARPOOLING IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED (by team/boat, if possible).

Spectator ParkingALL spectators must park off-site and take a shuttle bus to Sandy Run. The shuttle bus costs $15 round trip. Once the shuttle bus drops you off it is about another 15-20 walk to the grandstands for viewing. You may also pay a separate $5 each way for a shuttle from the drop-off point in Lot C to the Grandstand/Finish Line area. Offsite parking is at South County High School, 8501 Silverbrook Rd, Lorton, VA 22079MORE INFORMATION IS at VASRA.ORG.

VASRA Volunteers:  If you are signed up for a VASRA volunteer job (you know who you are) you may park free at Sandy Run. Tell the parking monitors when you arrive that you are a volunteer and for what job and they will direct you to the appropriate parking lot.

1972 Stuart Class Reunion, Saturday, June 1: Join us to help grill, bake, and serve to support the Stuart Class of 1972 reunion. This will be a major fundraising effort to help replace our aging launch motors and renovate several of our launches. Sign up today!
End of Year Picnic/Awards, June 2. Let’s celebrate the season together at our annual year-end picnic and awards event. Sign Up to support a day of celebrating our crew.

Car washes — save the dates!:We have car washes planned for Sunday, May 5, 12:30-5 PM. Sign up to help out. Thanks to volunteer parents, Melanie and David for organizing!
