Justice Rowing Supporters:

In its 53rd year, Justice Rowing is one of the oldest rowing teams in Northern Virginia and home of the 1968 Rowing World Champions and winner of the prized Princess Elizabeth Cup at the Henley Regatta.

2019—The Year in Review

The 2019 season was another exciting year with new challenges and opportunities. Each of our 42 rowers and 6 coaches worked very hard and their dedication paid off.

In November, the team began pre-season conditioning workouts 4 days per week in the weight room and on the ergs. With the generous support of the Lake Barcroft Association, we began our spring water season with three weeks of training on Lake Barcroft. Finally, we migrated down to the Occoquan for another season of continued growth, camaraderie, and competition. As with last season, all our races and adventures are documented in beautiful pictures on our website, justicerowing.org [and photo gallery site].

  • At the Virginia Championship [recap], we had four boats finish in the top four—our Women’s Junior Quadruple Sculls finished 4th, our Women’s Junior Double Sculls was 4th, the Men’s Senior Quadruple Sculls captured 3rd, and our Women’s Senior Single turned in a 2nd place finish.
  • Following States the team selected one boat, a Men’s Junior Four, to travel to Philadelphia, PA to compete in the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the world’s oldest and largest high school regatta including more than 5,600 rowers. While they did not advance to semi-finals, the boys represented Virginia well finishing mid-pack 35th in a field of nearly 60 crews.
  • Based on the State-level performance, the Scholastic Rowing Association of America invited our Women’s Single, senior Brooke Carmody, to compete in the prestigious National Championship Regatta. She competed on Dillon Lake, OH against the best high school rowers in the nation. Brooke turned in a strong performance but was edged out by strong contenders from the Midwest.

2020—The Year Ahead

This year marks a new era in Justice Rowing, as we say goodbye to Coaches Mike David, Al Wilson, and Chip Shand (read their Good-byes at JusticeRowing.org), and we welcome Rob Walker as our Head Coach. Rob has been coaching for 6 years at Jeb Stuart/Justice, and this year he assumes the helm as Head Coach. We also are excited to welcome two additional coaches to the team: Maggie Crotty and Eric Caldwell! Coach Maggie is a returning Justice (Stuart) alumna from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating from Stuart under Coach Mike’s tutelage in 2015, she spent four years rowing, coxing, and coaching in Western Pennsylvania. She looks forward to growing her own experience while giving back to the community that got her started. Coach Eric is a 30+ year veteran of the sport. His rowing resume extends up and down the East Coast. From collegiate successes at The University of Massachusetts, winning with Potomac Boat Club at USRowing Master’s Nationals, and coaching at Cape Cod Rowing, Knoxville Rowing Club, The University of Tennessee, and Bishop Ireton High School, Eric brings a plethora of experience and passion for this beautiful sport. We look forward to a great season with our new coaching line-up!
