Justice Rowing Supporters: There are 15 days until the Polar Bear Regatta! I know rowers have been excited to get back on the water at Lake Barcroft finally after several months of conditioning. We have a strong team this year with 23 rowers registered, and a good mix of novices and upperclassmen; the entire team is learning and helping each other out. Lots of Updates and reminders below — please read them. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email or give me a call. We’ll do our best to get back to you as soon as we can.
1. Coaching Update — In addition to Coach Dan and Coach Kitty, JHS alum Charles Haver is returning as a coach with the team. After graduating, Charles went on to row four years with George Mason, including several years as president of the crew club. We are actively searching for an additional coach or two and will update you as this progresses.
2. Critical Need for Hauling — If you or an available “friend” can help us with getting some of our launch/boat motors down to Woodbridge this week/asap for service please let us know. The motors are located at the Lake and can be taken down anytime between 10-5 M-Sat. and the repair company is expecting our equipment. Please send us an email if you can help out.
3. Boosters Meeting — March 7, 7 pm. Most likely virtual — link to come.
4. Boat Move (Back to Sandy Run) — March 9, 9-3 pm. We will be moving all of our equipment from Lake Barcroft back to Sandy Run for the remainder of the season. Sign up to help.
5. Regatta Season Kick Off Potluck Dinner — All parents/family, coaches, and rowers are invited for our kick-off dinner on Friday, March 15, 7:15-9 pm. Our dinner will be held in the JHS cafeteria right after the rowers return from practice. Please sign up to let us know if you are attending and what you would like to bring — we will have a lot of hungry rowers. If you aren’t able to bring anything, you can make a donation toward dinner. Any questions, please reach out to parent volunteer Christina Kish. Sign up and let us know your contribution to this celebratory dinner.
6. Chipotle fundraiser — Please save the date, March 12, 5-9 pm, at 6299 Seven Corners Ctr., Falls Church, VA 22044, for our next restaurant fundraiser. If you are ordering online please use code HBMNM3W for your order to be counted. For orders placed in person, please save the flyer to your phone, click and download the PDF, and show the flyer or mention Justice High School Rowing to the cashier at checkout.
7. CHANGE OF DATE — Please note that our End of Year Picnic/Awards Event will be held on Sunday afternoon, June 2, 5-7 pm. To volunteer or for more information about this event, and all Justice Rowing events, please go to our Master Sign Up Genius and click through the tabs.
8. Stuart Class of 1974 Alumni Picnic — Justice Rowing will be selling the food (picnic fare and desserts) for this group of approximately 100 alumni at Beach 5 on June 1. It has the potential to be a great fundraising opportunity. If anyone is interested in helping to organize this event it would be great — please let us know and send us an email.
9. US Rowing Safe Sport – This is another reminder of the US Rowing Safe Sport requirements. The policy was changed in 2023, so please read it carefully. If there are any questions, please reach out to the Boosters or SafeSport. Information about the Safe Sport program is available on their website. If you need Safe Sport training (details below) you’ll need to sign up as a “Supporter” at US Rowing, and please use our club code W2GS4 when you register so that your membership/training activity links to our team. Some key FAQs below:
USRowing and the U.S. Center for SafeSport have removed the requirement for every Adult Participant who is only an adult athleteto take the SafeSport 30-minute Adult Athlete training annually. Instead, only those Adult Participants who have Authority over and/or Regular Contact with a Minor Athlete will be required to take SafeSport training (the SafeSport Trained Core course and its annual Refresher courses).
The following Relevant Adult Participants are required by the USRowing Safe Sport Policy and the U.S. Center for SafeSport to take SafeSport training:
An employee, referee, coach, board member, or administrator of USRowing or its Member Organizations
A current or potential National Team athlete with the goal to participate in National Team selection such as development camp, trials, or selection camp
Any person(s) authorized, approved, or appointed by USRowing or its Member Organizations to have Regular Contact with or authority over Minor Athletes. This may include coaches, volunteers, medical staff, trainers, chaperones, monitors, contract personnel, bus/van drivers, officials, adult athletes who have Regular Contact* with a Minor Athlete, staff, board members, and any other individual who meets the Adult Participant definition
An adult athlete who has Regular Contact* with any Minor Athlete
*Regular Contact Is defined as ongoing interaction where an Adult Participant is in a role of direct and active engagement with any amateur athlete who is a minor. USRowing defines ongoing interactions as five (5) or more instances of In-Program Contact during a 12-month period. For purposes of this definition, a competition is considered a single instance of In-Program Contact regardless of duration.
