Good evening Justice Rowing family,

Week Past

Last week we ended spring break with a sprint! Four boats competed in one of the most competitive races yet. It was an early and windy day, but our wolves powered through a tough headwind. First off, our men’s double (M-1-2X) took first in their heat by a commanding 13.8 seconds! The boys have been steadily improving and we’re excited to see how fast they can get. Next, our men’s junior quad (M-Jr-4X) took also took the top spot in their event by a very similar, 13.7 second margin! Well done, boys. Immediately afterward, our women’s quad (W-1-4X) continued their season-long battle against Hylton. They finished second behind Granby HS, but ahead of Hylton! Finally, the novice boys pivoted to the four (M-N-4+) with only a week of practice under their belts. They took third in a blustery battle of bow-balls and buoys!

Week Forward

This week is our split-team double header! Mixed Quad (MW-4X) 2 Entries: Lineups TBD

Since the Rivanna Scrimmage is informal and involves only three schools, we wanted to get as much racing experience as possible out of the trip. Our goal is that all traveling rowers get to race in two events. However, this can be a logistical challenge, and some of these lineups may not practice together much (or at all) before Saturday. So, lineups are subject to change and cancellation if need be. Without VASRA regatta rules, we have more flexibility, but also more uncertainty. Regardless, it promises to be an exciting day! More details about travel here.

Please reference prior weeks’ emails if you have questions about when/how lineups are determined, and, as always, please reach out to your coaches if you have more questions. Heatsheets are released for each regatta and may change as late as day-of; check the left-hand column on vasra.org homepage for a live link.

Rivanna Regatta

A separate email with race-day logistics will follow this one tonight for those families/rowers attending Rivanna. PLEASE RESPOND TO THAT EMAIL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

The following rowers will be competing in the Rivanna Regatta:

Ronan Bates Suliana Barrera Paredes
Christian Brown Vasquez Grace Breed
Daniel Coronado Catherine Brogan
Zach Hardy Emma Buckhorn
Luke Montfort Hena Ershadi
Ethan Sobol Olivia Findorff
Tim Wang Sofia Palacios
Kyle Wilson Valeria Peterson

Regatta Rower Logistics

Timing: On FRIDAY, coaches will let rowers know what time their race is and WHEN they should be at Sandy Run, usually 2 hours before the race to allow time for parking/drop off, warm-ups, boat adjustments, and race planning. All rowers (and those not competing but who want to watch) should be dropped off at Sandy Run. When you arrive tell the parking attendants that you are dropping off a rower and they will direct you to where you can go. Non-competing rowers are always welcomed to cheer their teammates on! If you would like to stay at the regatta yourself, more info on parking is below.

Friday Night Pasta Dinners

Friday nights before each regatta we serve pasta to the rowers. If you’re up for hosting the rowers with pasta, salad, garlic bread, and dessert, this event is for you. It’s a great team-building event for the rowers. Please sign up to host here. If we don’t have volunteers to host, we won’t have a team dinner that night. An example menu is here. Plan for approximately 35 rowers. This is a rower’s only event—no parents. Please drop your rower off Friday after practice and pick them up promptly at 9:00 so they can rest up before Saturday’s race! This week’s dinner is hosted by the Brown Vasquez Family (Christian’s house) (address in email).

Regatta Reminders

Important Regatta Reminders: There is no parking at Sandy Run Regional Park (unless you are a volunteer that day); you will need to park at South County High School (SC), 8501 Silverbrook Rd, Lorton, VA 22079, and take a shuttle ($10/round trip) to get to the regatta site.

The SC Parking lot is about 15-20 minutes from Sandy Run. From the Sandy Run drop off it’s about a 15-20 minute walk down to the Grandstands where you can watch the race. NOTE: Spectators plan to be at the SC parking lot at least 1 – 1 1/2 hours BEFORE the scheduled race time. Please plan for traffic, congestion, etc. which can cause delays. A concession stand and restrooms are available at the Grandstands. Regatta t-shirts ($20-25) will be available. For the most up-to-date information on Regattas/Sandy Run, follow @VASRAresults. Heatsheets are released for each regatta; check the left-hand column on vasra.org homepage for a live link.

Thank you all for your support of our program and athletes!
